Like most small businesses, Smart Body Physical Therapy has its own special backstory. Laura Bunso, PT, MTC, opened our practice in the fall of 2004. A “military brat” growing up, Laura lived all around the world and came back to Jacksonville in high school, where she graduated, then went to undergraduate degree at Jacksonville University. From there, Laura went on to pursue her love of helping people through physical therapy at the University of St. Augustine. After graduating as a Physical Therapist in their Allied Health Services program in 1999, Laura went straight on to her career at what was then St. Luke’s Hospital/Mayo Clinic – what is now St. Vincent’s Hospital, Southside. During her first year, she worked as an in-patient Physical Therapist, doing everything from total joint recover to transplants and acute care therapy. By her second year, she was promoted to out-patient care, and by the time Laura decided to leave the hospital in early 2004, she was heading up the Women’s Health Taskforce for the hospital’s Rehab Department.
Laura left the hospital when she became very sick while pregnant with her second child, who had a lot of medical complications. While his delivery and multiple procedures went well, Laura decided to stay home from work to take care of her son, Luke, as doctors feared he may have a very hard recovery. Luke’s recovery went extremely well, and by the fall of 2004 Laura decided to continue in Physical Therapy by stepping out on her own. She started out renting a small 10 x 12 room with thoughts of only treating part-time, but continuously grew her “small” practice double to double the size about every other year, moving the clinic constantly. In 2011, Smart Body Physical Therapy found its home in our current location off Southpoint Parkway, in a 3000+ sq. foot building with 5 private treatment rooms, gym, and state-of-the-art Biofeedback for our pelvic health patients. For a business starting out part-time with 1 employee doing everything from treating to running the books, we’re now at 12 employees including 5 Physical Therapists and 1 Physical Therapy Assistant, with over 600 referring medical providers and serving patients in 1000s of zip codes throughout all of Florida, as well as nationwide and even internationally occasionally.
